Bound in full leather, some cracking to joints, contemporary binding with new volume labels. Volume I contains a reprint of "The Life of John Lesley", originally published in Brussels, 1596; "Defence of Queen Marie's Honour", from the 1571 Liege edition; Acts of Parliament directed against Bothwell, the Queen's husband. Vol II includes Buchanan's Detection of the Actions of Mary Queen of Scots (old Scottish dialect); trials concerning the murder of King Henry Darnley; Black Acts. Vol. III concerns the negotiations of John Lesley, Bishop of Ross, on behalf of Queen Mary. It runs from her escape from Lochleven to England in 1568 until 1574, when the Bishop was released from prison and travelled to France. Volume IV, is in two parts, the first part contains letters and state papers from 1568 and the second concerning conferences at York, Westminster and Hampton Court in 1568-9. Some foxing. Vols I and II were later reprinted by Bettenham, index to Vol I, explaining the more obscure words.
